Maya Angelou (1928–2014) was an American award-winning author, poet, and civil rights activist. The internationally acclaimed Angelou received the US Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011 and was awarded more than fifty honorary degrees throughout her career. Her work has been lauded as translating quintessential elements of the Black, American, female experience, capturing the spirit of human earnestness and dignity.
