Many of us enjoy kicking a ball around, playing catch with friends, and keeping physically fit, but some of us feel a consistent drive to push our mind-body connections to the max, finding exhilaration in discovering and breaking through our perceived physical limitations and developing our bodies to their most effective and efficient states. Whether individually or part of a team, whether in competition with others or just ourselves, being an athlete is a fundamental part of who we are. But when we run into relationship problems with our body and its capabilities—or when those relationships are complicated by cultural expectations and beliefs about athletes—it can impact all areas of our life and health.
