Codependency refers to an imbalanced relationship pattern learned in early childhood. While feeling responsible for a loved one is natural, a relationship can become unhealthy when a person’s identity becomes wrapped up in caring for, supporting, or “fixing” another while subordinating their own needs. This can create a self-enforcing harmful relationship. The excessive care and emotional investment required in codependent relationships can leave a person feeling helpless and trapped, but there are healthy and constructive ways to reset boundaries and reinvest in interdependent relationships.
