Compulsive Spending

Compulsive spending (used interchangeably with shopping addiction, compulsive buying, shopaholism, and oniomania) is not an official diagnosis, but it is a commonly identified behavior that expresses itself by the investment of excessive amounts of time and resources in shopping, buying, and acquiring. When we seem to feel driven to shop regardless of our material needs—whether bargain-hunting or snapping up designer brands—we are diverting our attention from other needs and desires. Whether or not our behavior becomes life-disrupting (such as accumulating debt or causing friction in a marriage), it calls us to attend to our underlying unmet needs.
