The study of the typical patterns of the Hero’s Journey was popularized by Joseph Campbell, who was influenced by Carl Jung’s work on archetypes. Many popular traditional and modern stories across cultures worldwide follow the typical structure of the Hero’s Journey, in which the hero encounters a catalyst that forces them from the comfort of their regular life, then goes on an adventure, during which they experience multiple hardships or obstacles in the process of obtaining their goal.
