While physical immortality has been the obsession of a few throughout human civilization, most regard it as a fanciful—or even unnatural—dream. On the other hand, the soul’s immortality—and the process through which it might attain or lose immortal status—has been debated in almost every known religious and spiritual tradition, and remains the driving force behind many people’s beliefs, morals, and life choices.
