“Nonbinary” is a label that attempts to express a broadening perception of gender in a culture that historically has only accepted two gender options: male and female. It can be used to mean being a gender that is both male and female to some degree, or it can be used to represent a completely different gender that is neither male nor female (whereas agender refers to having no gender at all). While gaining more recognition, nonbinary individuals still face daily misunderstandings and invalidations from those who still expect someone’s gender expression to match a cultural preconception: in the case of nonbinary people, usually that they are androgynous or have a visually identifiable balance of traditional masculine and feminine traits. It is impossible to tell someone’s gender by the way they look, speak, or act: many nonbinary people look and express themselves in ways that are traditionally masculine or feminine.
