Performance Pressure



Any time we face disproportionate, high-stakes, or very public consequences for performing a skill—whether as an entertainer for thousands, a surgeon for a single patient, or an assembler on a production line—we are operating under performance pressure. Even though some of us thrive under a certain amount of this kind of stress, it can turn toxic when the metrics others use to judge us aren’t ones we have control over or the benchmarks for success are raised to near-impossible or unsustainable levels. Operating under high amounts of performance pressure for a sustained period of time can wear down all aspects of our well-being.
