For some, retirement can prove to be the permanent vacation they’ve dreamed of after working hard for decades, but for many the reality is far more complicated than the fantasy—both emotionally and practically. The loss of structure and meaningful, productive activities can feel very much like an ending, especially when accompanied by a decline in health. The loss of employment—even if chosen—can cause a shift in identity that leaves many feeling lost.
