Setting Limits and Boundaries

Setting personal limits or boundaries is a process of establishing how we want to be treated by other people. When we set limits or boundaries, we let others know what kinds of behavior we will tolerate, and how we will respond when someone has crossed a line or asked for too much from us. Our boundaries also help define who we are as individuals and provide a necessary distinction between our needs and the needs of others, which is an extremely important aspect of self-care. Good boundaries help to prevent things like codependency and emotional burnout, which typically occur when the lines between self and other are blurred to a point of dysfunction.
