Our gender expression can be an important and valued part of our identity. But social pressure and cultural messaging focused on our gender—and how well we can live up to or “perform” to those expectations—can have a great impact on our feelings of self-worth and can make us struggle with self-acceptance. However, we can also gain great personal satisfaction in living up to those expectations. Our relationship to our gender can touch every aspect of our well-being, and our unique and shared gender experiences create a tapestry of community that we can rely on to help us grow more fully into ourselves. Every one of us has the right to live a vibrant life in our full identity, and our struggle for well-being can find support from those who understand and validate the complexities, nuance, pain, and joy of our community’s lived experiences.
This is a book about getting real. It tells the truth about busyness and peace in a way that can help us women change our lives. Until quite recently, it was politically incorrect to mention that balancing work and family, while having any time left to nurture our spirit, was a tall order.
It’s no secret that women today are juggling a lot. We now make up more than half the workforce in the United States and are busier than ever with partners, children, family, and friends, often putting the needs of others ahead of our own.
A Radical Awakening lays out a path for women to discover their inner truth and powers to help heal others and the planet. Dr. Shefali helps women uncover the purpose that already exists within them and harness the power of authenticity in every area of their lives.
When The Dance of Deception was published, Lerner discovered that women were not eager to identify with the subject. “Well, I don’t do deception” was a common response. We all “do deception,” often with the intention to protect ourselves and the relationships we depend on.
