Female friendship has been celebrated across many cultures as an important social, emotional, and even spiritual factor in women’s lives, especially in places where women do not have the same access to social and political spaces as men, or where the access that is offered doesn’t take into account experiences or circumstances unique to women. Relationships between women can follow patterns that differ from cross-gender or male friendships, and there have been many thoughts on the best way to foster, strengthen, and heal them.
