In the 21st century, the mental and physical benefits of mindfulness meditation are well researched and widely documented. But in 1979, this wasn’t the case—and that’s why it was so revolutionary when Jon Kabat-Zinn founded the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts in that year. Since then, the clinic’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program has helped thousands of people increase their self-esteem, build resilience to setbacks, change stress into enthusiasm, and even decrease pain levels from chronic conditions.
