Typically, when a child is diagnosed with autism, parents embark on a mission to find effective treatments and support systems. However, during treatment planning neurotypical siblings are often overlooked.
In truth, every family is neurodiverse, since every person thinks and acts a little differently than every other person. No two people will have identical brains. With at least half of our family on the autism spectrum, however, we just take those differences to another degree!
Given that roughly one in four adults have a disability of some kind, all our families include disabled ancestors. Disability is part of every family story. But we have to know of our disabled kin to claim them.
I am autistic. I am also the mother of an autistic child, and the wife of a neurotypical (nonautistic) partner. We are a neurodiverse family.
This past year, on top of dealing with COVID quarantines and not being able to see friends and family and my mom’s cancer coming back, my family has become a part of the neurodiversity crowd.
